Sector Skills Councils (SSCs)

Each of the 25 SSCs is an employer-led, independent organisation that covers a specific sector across the UK. The four key goals are:

  • to reduce skills gaps and shortages
  • improve productivity, business and public service performance
  • increase opportunities to boost the skills and productivity of everyone in the sector's workforce
  • improve learning supply including apprenticeships, higher education and National Occupational Standards (NOS).

The 25 Sector Skills Councils are as follows:

Asset Skills - Property, housing, cleaning & facilities management

Automotive Skills - The retail motor industry

Cogent - Chemicals, nuclear, oil and gas, petroleum and polymer industries

Construction Skills - Construction

Energy & Utility Skills - Electricity, gas, waste management and water industries

e-skills - UK Information technology, telecommunications and contact centres

Financial Services Skills Council - Financial services industry

GoSkills - Passenger transport

Improve - Food & drink manufacturing and processing

Lantra - Environmental and land-based industries

Lifelong Learning UK - Community based learning and development, further education, higher education, library and information services, work based learning

People 1st - Hospitality, leisure, travel & tourism

SEMTA - Science, engineering and manufacturing technologies

Skillfast-UK - Apparel, footwear and textile industry

Skills for Health - All staff groups working in the NHS, independent and voluntary health organisations

Skills for Justice - Custodial care, community justice and police

Skills for Logistics - Freight Logistics Industry Rail road, deep sea, short sea, Air and Waterways

Skills Active - Active leisure and learning

Skillset - Broadcast, film, video, interactive media and photo imaging

Skillsmart retail - Retail

SummitSkills - Building services engineering (Electro-technical), heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and plumbing)

Government Skills Council - Central Government

Creative and Cultural Skills - Arts, museums and galleries, heritage, crafts and design

Proskills Process and manufacturing of extractives, coatings, refractories, building products, paper and print

Skills for Care and Development Social care including children, families and young children
